Because fire can grow and spread so quickly, having working smoke alarms in your Lodi area home can mean the difference between life and death. But these life-saving devices are only effective when they're working properly. Smoke alarms with batteries that are dead, disconnected, or missing can't alert you to the dangers of smoke and fire.
General Information You Must Know...
- Replace your smoke detector when they are 10 years old.
- There should be one detector outside every room where someone sleeps
- Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall; wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to 12 inches away from the ceiling.
- There should also be at least one smoke detector on each floor including the basement, regardless of whether some sleeps on a particular floor.
- Test your detectors once a month.
- Test the batteries in every detector twice a year. Usually when you change the clock in the fall and spring.
- Never "borrow" batteries from your smoke detector. Your smoke detector cannot protect you if it doesn't have a battery
- Whenever your detector sounds an alarm, everybody in your home should evacuate using your escape plan.
The Ionization Detector:
- Responds quickly to hot fires with little smoke .
- Is sometimes prone to false alarms .
The Photoelectric Detector:
- "Sees" smoke particles and responds well to smoldering fires.
- Is less prone to false alarms .
